Honors Experience: Pre-Approved
Count: One
The UHP Welcome Experience is hosted by University of Cincinnati's Honors Program. When students join UHP, they are clueless in lots of stages like:
What to expect with the program?
How it will benefit them?
How will they make best use of it?
To answer those questions, "UHP Welcome Experience" is helping!
And I am really happy to tell you guys that I got the opportunity to serve as the "Mentor" for UHP Welcome Experience! Since everything was still hybrid in Spring 2021, our first training was virtual. But we got the chance to meet with each other in other meetings and yes, we got t-shirts! I love free swags! :) Bria Howard was the lead of it. She is an amazing Honors Advisor of UHP! And my coordinator was Ashley Miller who is also an amazing Honors student! She supervised me at every step of my this honor experience!
We were a team of 6 mentors including me. And each of us was assigned with around 5 students! I was super excited to network with people in my team! And so we started lots of planning! One thing which was difficult for all of us was getting the students in the event since everything was smoothly transferring from online to in-person. We were prioritizing the health of the students so we had to be smart when planning events.
My first event with my students was "Scavenger Hunt around UC campus". It was very very tiring thing, not gonna lie! But me and my students, we all were so excited to cross out the lists given to us for "Scavenger Hunt". It was a great event because I was able to make close connections with them and I am still in touch with them!
I still remember my first week at UC. I was carrying the map all around the campus and asking UC police small-small things! I missed classes because I was clueless about locations. Honestly, UC is a small maze at first and learning short-cut routes is very important. So, I was glad that being a "mentor", I was able to help some students with their transition to the UC community.
When I was telling them short-cuts, they were getting more excited and they still call me to ask more short-cuts, lol! Its' a fact that I can not do short-cuts to already short-cut route! But I love to explore the shortest ones and share with them or friends of mine. I also gave them t-shirts which was again provided by UHP! We all were super excited because of t-shirts, and we clicked lots of photos in them around campus. Great memories to remember!
I was having lots of meetings with them from time to time. Even, now as well! We have mastered the topics like "organizations on campus", "dinning centers on campus", "on-campus and off-campus housing options", "UHP Program", "UHP Experiences", "campus-life", "work-life balance", and etc. Whatever new topic we discover, we make sure to talk about it!
I loved to spam their emails with updates and attaching lots of gifs to keep them engaged! No worries, they were not bothered at all, at least that's what they told me!
Overall, being a "mentor" is not easy! Whatever I am delivering to them will affect them or their college experience! So, I took the responsibility carefully and delivered it with all of my best efforts! I am glad I got the opportunity like this to help students and be a friend of theirs at the end of the day!
Looking for more roles like this in future!
