Key Lessons on Leading Inclusively

In my final post, I want to share the biggest lessons I learned from the enriching experience of leading two university clubs centered on diversity and inclusion.

The most important lesson was the power of empathy and giving a voice to all members. Taking time to understand different perspectives, and ensuring everyone felt heard and valued was crucial. As a leader, I had to set my assumptions aside and create space for open dialog.

I also learned to make decisions consultative-ly, incorporating diverse viewpoints from my team. While this took more time, the outcomes were more holistic and effective in serving everyone’s needs. Being ready to have courageous but respectful conversations on controversial topics was also essential for growth.

Above all, this experience reinforced my conviction that inclusive leaders play a pivotal role in shaping future generations. The culture we build through our student groups today has ripple effects on members’ worldviews and ability to drive change as global citizens.

While challenging, serving as President allowed me to have a profound impact on an interpersonal level. I hope that by sharing my learnings, I can play a small part in developing fellow students to lead inclusively and empower the communities they touch.
